In the story “proficiency” by Shannon Nicole, she talks about how she developed a her feeling towards writing. in the story she says that she wa always good at it and was overall a smart student. But once she got the results of a proficiency test she says that basically determine whether or not you will get a high school diploma. She discovered that the only part of the test she failed was writing. She was very surprised that she only failed in what she considered to be one of her strengths. Nonetheless she took the test over and failed again which brings her to tears. Her failing again even surprised her classmates. In the end she says that she learned that people may not view her writing all the same. Her teachers enjoyed her writing but clearly the graders in the test did not.
Im sure we all can relate to her story, she had a skill and felt that is was amazing. But just like us she met a greater challenge that she had never met before that conquered enthusiasm and made her feel bad. I can relate to this because this is how i felt upon entering high school. i was always good at math and didn't have much of a problem remembering different ways to solving math problems. but when i entered high school the level\ of mathematics was far beyond what I’ve ever experienced or dealt with and that made me hate math i swore to myself since highschool that i would always avoid math as much as possible.
In her writing she uses a strong emotional appeal towards the reader in telling how she felt when she failed even said the she cried, and that her own classmates couldn’t understand how. She showed her anger at the people who graded her test when she said” i told myself that maybe the people grading the test didn’t have the slightest clue in about what constituted as good writing. I plan to to try to connect to all my reader emotional when describing my feeling on an event and what my emotional response was at the time.
