In this source the author uses statistics to demonstrate religion in politics. Using his statistics to show how religion has already infiltrated the government. He showed that most Jew, Black Protestants, and Catholics favor the Democratic Party because of how many of them affiliated with these institutions of religion. He conclude that religion is relevant in politics and basically divides them up into what he calls “six religious families” and shows how they each have a distinct effect of certain if not all laws.
This part of the book is useful because it provide me with statistical evidence of religion affect politics and in relations law making. This helps my argument that religion is the basis of most if not all laws. It shows that lawmaker of the United states might be where they are not only because of their qualifications but because of what religion they affiliate with or simply because of the religious views. It also show that citizens might be more influence to elect leaders of their community or district because they might share the same religious beliefs.
Tim, H. (2015) CNN: Indiana Uses Religious Freedom against Gays.
This article is about the recent outrage at the Indiana religious freedom law that some view as giving people to discriminate against gays. This discrimination can include refusing to provide service to homosexual because it may violate their own personal beliefs or be forbidden in their religion (as it already is in the world’s most popular religions). Some people view this outrage as a simple misunderstanding of the law and that the law is simply misunderstood.
This is a useful article because supports my belief that law is influenced by religion. This article supports my previous source which shows that most of the law maker of this country are followers of certain religions or faiths and of the religions or faiths homosexuality is forbidden and to an extant seen as sin.
Freedom from Religion Foundation Churches and Political Lobbying Activities
According to this page churches are getting around laws that were designed to remove their power from politics to affect politics. Churches are being used as “polling place” for their community. This page criticizes the law that stop churches from doing this because the law only speak in excess of the involvement but not the tendencies to do so. Also the page mentions how the leaders of the churches can get away with influencing community members to their own personal beliefs like their view on same sex marriage and abortion.
This article is useful to me because it tell me the others ways in which religions affect the politics of this country and how it is sometimes not dealt with when it should be. This Article starts to lean in favor removing any connections between religion and government. This article provides more points of research that I plan to conduct.
Brad, R. PhD. (2012) An Overview of Conservative Christian Religious Cultural Norm and U.S. Law
This journal about conservative Christian beliefs affect laws. In this journal the author argues that many of the beliefs of the longest lasting religion in America affects law that are meant to manage the way citizen conduct themselves. For example he talked about how the way marriage and divorce are viewed in law is similar to what is written in biblical scripture. And the religion at a point in America ruled society. Another example is that Christian do not tolerate profanity. The first amendment does not cover all kinds of “speech and expressions”, yet there have been cases in which people were sued for using what a Christian can consider offensive language.
This journal is useful to my research because it provides me with example where religion is present in law. Also this journal shows where the law is affected by religion and how it is affected. He provides very good detail to support my hypothesis that religious beliefs are very present in the making of laws.
